One template-guided CSV is everything Valence needs to show real profitability and cost attribution.
What the file needs
| Column | Rule |

| entity | Legal entity or business unit. Free text, spelled consistently — it is how rows are grouped. |
| account_category | One of 18 accepted values. Case-insensitive. This column, not the sign of the amount, is what tells Valence whether a row is revenue or cost. |
| account_name | The specific GL account line. Free text. |
| period | YYYY-MM. One calendar month per row. |
| amount | Always positive — revenue and expense alike. No currency symbols, no thousands separators, no accounting parentheses. |
A file with any invalid row is rejected whole, listing the row numbers and what was wrong. Valence never imports the readable half of a file — every number downstream would be quietly wrong.
